Bully sticks - Not a good choice of treat for your furry pal.

February 18, 2013

Think those inexpensive little sticks are a good treat for your dog?  Think again!!!

"Bully sticks"  (which are actually made from uncooked, dried penis of bulls or steer), are not only packed with calories, but could also be packed with bacteria.

According to a recent study* where 26 bully sticks made by different manufacturers were examined, there were between 9 and 22 calories per inch.  Translated to percentages, for a 10lb dog, that is 30% of required daily calories and 9% for a 50lb dog.

Many pet owners forget to factor in the calories in treats that their pet's are given daily, which contributes to the pet obesity problems we see.

Additionally, and equally as important, in the same examination of the 26 bully sticks, 9 of them were contaminated with either E. coli, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or Colstridium difficile.  (All people handling bully sticks should wash their hands after touching!)

There are plenty of delicious, healthy and safe treats for dogs.  If you'd like to ask about .  healthy alternatives, feel free to ask at your next appointment or call the office at 860-645-1700.
