Internal parasites - Prevention is easy!

May 2, 2012

Things you should know
(but didn’t want to think about)
regarding internal parasites.

If you have a cat or dog, internal parasites is a topic you need to be informed about.   Even if your cat is an indoor only cat, or your dog is not one to spend much time outside except for bathroom breaks a few times daily – they can still be affected. And – Did You Know?? – May internal parasites are zoonotic, which means that they can be transmitted between animals and people (especially children, whose hands tend to be many more places than adults)!

FOR CAT OWNERS –

It is fairly common for cats to become infected with internal parasites. Sometimes parasites can go unnoticed for a period of time, and other times they can cause potentially dangerous health problems for your cat. The good news is that staving off a parasite problem is easy! Town & Country recommends pet owners submit a fecal sample each year at their animals yearly exam. In addition good flea prevention and quarterly preventative deworming for outdoor cats is strongly advised. You may be surprised to know that more than 1 in 5 cats in Connecticut test positive for roundworms or hookworms! ProfenderÒ is a topcial dewormer, applied to the skin much like a topical flea medication. This takes the guess work out of trying, or fighting, to give your cat a pill. One dose treats all lifecycles of a parasite and it’s proven 100% effective on tapeworms, roundworms and hookworms.

FOR DOG OWNERS -

All dogs spend enough time outdoors to potentially come into contact with parasites. The scene is simple…dog walks outside where a parasite has been, dog picks up a parasite on his paw, gets home and licks his paw and the cycle begins. An annual fecal sample done with a physical exam is crucial. Many of us already know that it is imperative for dogs to be on routine heartworm prevention. What you may not realize is that Heartgard and TriHeart also have prevenative internal parasite medication in that monthly chewable dose, that protect again roundworms, tapeworms and hookworms. Dogs, like cats, can also get tapeworms from fleas, therefore routine monthly flea and tick prevention is a must for dogs.

DID YOU KNOW

  • Cockroaches, mice, and flies all can carry roundworm eggs – cats are natural hunters and will hunt them!

  • 15% of commercial potting soil contains roundworm eggs

  • The Northeast has the highest prevalence of roundworms than any other part of the country

  • Studies also show that although most persons infected with roundworm have no symptoms the parasite is capable of causing blindness and other systemic illness

  • Children and immune-compromised people (cancer patients, people with HIV /AIDS, organ transplants) are more susceptible of being infected with these parasites
